Did You Know?
Dollar General’s history may be traced back to the early 1900s with the story of James Luther “J.L.” Turner and his son Cal Turner. J.L.’s father got into an accident in 1902 when James was 11 years old. He had to quit school and worked to assist in providing for his family. He became a traveling dry goods salesman but left the job after 10 years and settled in Scottsville, Kentucky. By the 1930s, he started buying and liquidating bankrupt general stores. His only child joined him to these closeouts and gained business knowledge at a young age. The company that Cal Turner co-founded went public as Dollar General Corporation four years after his father’s passing in 1964.
