The company was founded in 1907 in Seattle, Washington as The American Messenger Company. James Casey was the founder with Claude Ryan and most deliveries were made on foot and for long trips and on foot for shorter routes. They focused primarily on package delivery to retail stores with special delivery mail delivered to the U.S. Post Office. In 1916, Charlie Soderstorm joined the company and brought more vehicles for the growing delivery business. In 1975, UPS moved their headquarters to Greenwich, Connecticut and began to serve 48 contiguous states of the United States. They also launched UPS Next Day Air Service ten years later.
