Portland General Electric (PGE) is a public utility company based in Portland, Oregon. The company distributes electricity to customers in areas such as Marion, Multnomah, Polk, Clackamas, Yamhill, and Washington counties. PGE serves 31 cities with an average of 912,209 retail customers, 268 industrial customers, 800,372 residential customers, and 111,569 commercial customers. They purchase and produce energy mostly from coal and natural gas plants, and hydroelectric power from dams on the Willamette, Clackamas, and Deschutes rivers. Today, PGE does not serve all of Portland, it serves 44% of the state. It services territories west of the Willamette River, sharing most of the city east of the river with Pacific Power.

The company was founded as the Willamette Falls Electric Company in 1888 and is headquartered in Portland, Oregon. Parker F. Morey and Edward L. Eastham sent power generated by one of four brush arc light dynamos at Willamette Falls over a 14 mile electric power transmission line to portland, which was the first United States power plant to do so. On August 6, 1892, Morey, Henry Failing, and Fredrick Van Voorhies Holman formed the Portland General Electric Company, which was funded by General Electric and the investment arm of the Old Colony Trust. For most of its life PGE has been an independent company but briefly was owned by the Houston-based Enron Corporation from 1997 to 2006.
