Hendick Meijer was a barber who decided to enter the grouchy store industry during the Great Depression. He was among the first stores to have shopping carts and self service shopping. It was so successful he began to open more stores and by the 1960s the company opened over two dozen stores. The company was originally named Thrifty Acres but renamed in 1986 after the death of founder Hendrik Meijer died and his son took over the company. Today the company has opened 259 stores and 208 gas stations selling products such as groceries, clothing, sporting goods, electronics, footwear, and much more.
