Company Summary:
Lowe’s Companies, Inc., better known as Lowe’s, is an American retail company that specializes in home improvement. They have their headquarters located at Mooresville, North Carolina and operates a chain of retail stores across the US and Canada.
The first Lowe’s store, North Wilkesboro Hardware, opened in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina in 1921 by Lucius Smith Lowe. After Lowe passed away in 1940, his daughter, Ruth Buchan, inherited the business and sold it to her brother Jim Lowe, who took his brother-in-law Carl Buchan as his partner in 1943. World War II affected many homes and an increase in construction was anticipated and made them focus on hardware and building materials.
Did you know?
In 1949, they bought a second location in Sparta, North Carolina. After Buchan died of a heart attack in 1961, the company had already opened six stores across North Carolina. His team then took the company public in 1961 under the name Lowe’s Companies Inc. Come 1962, Lowe’s ran 21 stores and had annual revenue of $32 million. As of February 2021, Lowe’s operates more than 2,000 home improvement and hardware stores in North America.
Final Company Statement:
