Company Summary:

Eli Lilly and Company is an American pharmaceutical company that is based in Indianapolis, Indiana and have existing offices in 18 countries.  They have products that are sold in about 125 countries.  Col. Eli Lilly is a pharmaceutical chemist and veteran of the American Civil War and this was where the company’s name was named after in 1876 when the company was founded.

A year later, Lilly partnered with John F. Johnston and formed a drug manufacturing operation named Johnston and Lilly, but the partnership was dissolved in 1876.  He used his share of his assets to open his own pharmaceutical manufacturing business in Indianapolis in May 1876.  This new venture soon became Eli Lilly and Company.

Final Company Information

By the late 1880s, Colonel Lilly was one of the Indianapolis area’s most well-known businessmen, with a company that had more than 100 employees and had $200,000 in annual sales.  As they grew, other businesses set up operations near the plant on Indianapolis’s near south side.  The place soon developed into a major business and industrial hubs.

One of Lilly’s many inventions was the Prozac which was introduced in Belgium as a treatment of clinical depression.  After several acquisitions in the past, they made their largest one yet in 2019 when they purchased Loxo Oncology to widen treatment options for cancer patients by using first-in-class and best-in-class medicines.
