Company Summary:

J. C. Penney Company, Inc. is a department store chain in the US with more than 800 locations in 49 US states and in Puerto Rico. They do business as JCPenney and abbreviated as JCP. JCPenney sells traditional merchandise as well as large Fine Jewelry departments, The Salon by InStyle, and a Sephora inside JCPenney.

A history of JCPenney would show James Cash Penney of Hamilton, Missouri worked for a local retailer. After relocating to Colorado at a doctor’s advice to improve his health, he worked for Thomas Callahan and Guy Johnson in 1898 at a dry goods store called Golden Rule stores in Colorado and Wyoming. The following year brought him to Evanston, Wyoming to work with Johnson in another Golden Rule store. Callahan and Johnson wanted Penney to join them in opening a new Golden Rule store and soon moved to Kemmerer, Wyoming with his wife and infant son to start his own store in 1902. Two more stores were opened and he purchased full interest in all three locations while Callahan and Johnson dissolved the partnership in 1907. To be closer to banks and railroads, Penney moved the headquarters to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1907. 34 stores have been opened by 1912 in the Rocky Mountain States. All stores were under the J.C. Penney banner by 1913.

On May 15, 2020, JCPenney filed for bankruptcy protection and closed more than 200 stores due to the coronavirus pandemic.  By June 2020, JCPenney reopened approximately 800+ stores.
