Soichiro Honda, Honda’s founder, always had an interest in automobiles. He worked as a mechanic at the Art Shokai garage where he tuned cars and got entered them into races. Honda founded Tōkai Seiki or Eastern Sea Precision Machine Company. They made piston rings working out of the Art Shokai garage. He was able to supply piston rings to Toyota but lost the contract due to poor quality. Honda was able to mass-produce acceptable piston rings to Toyota after attending engineering school and visiting factories around Japan. Honda’s first completed motorcycle was the 1949 D-Type. The first production automobile from Honda was the T360 mini pick-up truck which was sold in August 1963. The American Honda Motor Company, Inc. is a North American subsidiary of the Honda Motor Company, Ltd. It was founded in 1959.
