Company Summary: CNA is a financial corporation that is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois in the United States. Their principal subsidiary is Continental Casualty Company was founded in 1897. CNA, the existing parent company, was incorporated in 1967.

CNA began in 1897 as Continental Assurance Company of North America in Detroit. Their purpose was to offer accident and health insurance to those employed by the railroad industry. The company then merged with the Metropolitan Accident Company and changed their name to Continental Casualty Company, and relocated to Chicago. They later acquired the National Fire Insurance Company of Hartford in 1956 and years later, acquired the American Casualty Company in 1963. To create a name for the company, they took the first letter of each of the original companies and formed CNA. It was then known as the Continental National American Group, but was later rebranded to simply CNA.
