The Allstate Corporation is an American insurance company with headquarters located in Northfield Township, Illinois since 1967. Allstate is a large corporation with 2018 revenues of $39.8 billion making them come 79th in the 2019 Fortune 500 list of the largest US corporations by total revenue.
It was in 1925 when Sears had a national contest to come up with a name of a new brand of car tires. The name “Allstate” was chosen after more than 2 million name submissions. It was trademarked the following year. The idea for Allstate Insurance Company came while insurance broker Carl L. Odell and Sears Chairman General, Robert E. Wood was playing a bridge came on a commuter train in 1930. The idea was to sell auto insurance and Wood passed the proposal to the Sears board of directors, which approved it. Allstate Insurance Company, named after Sears’ tire brand, came into business on April 17, 1931. After many acquisitions, Allstate announced the acquisition of National General Insurance for $4 billion in July 2020.
