The company was founded in 1901 by John W. Nordstrom when he opened a shoe store called Wallin & Nordstrom. His co-founder Carl F. Wallin, was the owner of the adjacent shoe repair shop. In 1928 John Nordstrom retired and sold his share to two of his sons and a year later, Wallin also retired and sold his shares to them. In 1930 the company had a grand opening on the remodel of Second Avenue store and announced the name change to Nordstrom. The company went public in 1971 and became a full line retailer but their businesses continued beyond stores in 1974. They found their off price Nordstrom Rack division and they have grew into a full line and off price divisions throughout the United States and Canada.
