The company traces back to 1911 to Louis Upton, who worked as an insurance salesman. He acquired a patent to a manual clothes washer and approached his uncle to add an electric motor to the design. They soon began producing electric motor driven wringer washers and their first customer ordered 100 machines. In 1916 they landed Sears as a customer and in order to avoid becoming over reliant on them, Upton began marketing the washer under a new name. The increasing sales led the company to merge with Nineteen Hundred Washer Company. During 1947 the company introduced a spinner-type, automatic washer and a year later they sold the company under the Whirlpool brand name.
