The company was founded in 1927 by Joe C. Thompson as he opened the world’s first convenience store. Small grocery stores were available but Thompson wanted to sell products such as milk and bread in convenience stores to reduce customers traveling long distances. Stores were opened in other states besides Texas, such as Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. In 1963 a 7 Eleven near a university in Austin, Texas came up with the idea of staying open 24/7 to accommodate students and became so popular other locations followed.
