Dr. Sam B. Williams worked at the company Chrysler on their automotive  turbine systems. He had imagined a wider set of applications for the small gas turbine engine. He left Chrysler in 1954 and formed Williams Research Corporation in Birmingham, Michigan. In 1981, the company became known as Williams International. The company is known for building small turbofan engines sickens the 1950s for the use in cruise missiles and target and reconnaissance drones. While using the missile engines, the company developed a series of personal VTOL flying craft which included a jet powered belt in 1969. In 1996, Williams International joined AGATE’s General Aviation Propulsions program.
