In 1892, Tufts Board of Trustees voted the college be opened to women in the undergraduate departments. Tufts remained a small New England liberal arts college until the 1970s, it transformed into a large research university that offers several doctorates. Tufts University is classified as a Research I university which denotes the highest level of research activity.
