Rice students are to abide by a strict Honor Code which is enforced by a student run Honor Council. The school has over 8,212 students and is organized into eleven residential colleges. The school was established on September 23, 1912 after the murder of its namesake William Marsh Rice. William Marsh Rice was a Massachusetts businessman who made his fortune in real estate, cotton trading, and railroad development. During the year of 1891, Rice chartered a free tuition educational institute to be created upon his death. His will specified that the institution was to be “a competitive institution of the highest grade” and that only white students be permitted to attend. In 1911, the cornerstone was laid for the institutions first building which was the Administration Building which is now known as Lovett Hall in honor of its founding president.
